Heated debate in House over Escheats Bill & Carlos’s viral video on the bill

Digital Goa, July 24 – Assembly on Thursday witnessed a heated exchange over a Calling Attention by BJP MLA Nilesh Cabral on the Goa Escheats, Forfeiture and Bona Vacantia Act, 2024 and viral video made by Congress MLA Carlos Ferreira. Govt said the Act, rooted in Article 296 of the Constitution, aims to protect vacant and abandoned Goan land from encroachments, fraud and land grabbing, and accused some individuals of misrepresenting it to spread fear. Cabral also referred to a viral video by Ferreira, which allegedly referred to the legislation an “official land grab.” Ferreira, in turn, criticised the Calling Attention itself as “misleading”, repeating his claims. CM Pramod Sawant defended the Act stating that its was brought in to tackle illegal land grabbing, further adding that 22 cases have been registered in the land scam and 75 arrests have been made, including six government servants. He also advised Carlos to move the courts instead of making allegations.
