This memorial stands as a testimony to a tragic boat accident that occurred on December 3, 1901

This memorial stands as a testimony to a tragic boat accident that occurred on December 3, 1901, when the launch GOA capsized in the Mandovi River, resulting in the drowning of 81 out of approximately 170 passengers. The overcrowded launch was carrying people from Verem to Old Goa for the Feast of St. Francis Xavier when it capsized. In remembrance of the victims, the Goan diaspora in Aden, Yemen, constructed this Memorial Cross in 1904 on the riverbank in Panaji.
