Digital Goa, Jan 11 – A large number of Chimbel villagers on Today marched to the residence of St Cruz MLA Rudolf Fernandes, protesting against the proposed Unity Mall project and demanding its immediate scrapping. The villagers demanded to know if their MLA was with them in their demand against the project. During the protest, demonstrators broke through a police cordon and marched ahead to press their demands. The villagers have been protesting against the project alleging that it would disturb the fragile ecosystem around Toyyar lake and place additional stress on local resources such as water and electricity. They have also alleged of lack in transparency in govt processes related to the project. The villagers have also moved the courts against the permissions given to the project. The villagers have earlier announced plans to stage a mega protest march to the State Assembly on January 15 to highlight their opposition to the project.
