Oct 6 – Cuncolim residents have submitted a complain to the National Green Tribunal(NGT) regarding Environmental Pollution caused by Cuncolim Industrial Estate, Goa. Pointing out that there was severe environmental pollution in the area, the residents in their email to NGT alleged that despite numerous complaints to local authorities and politicians, no concrete actions have been taken to address the issue. The mail has brought to the notice of the Green Tribunal various types of pollutions such as air Pollution through emissions from factories and vehicles, water pollution through industrial untreated effluents which are contaminating nearby water sources, posing health risks, soil degradation through hazardous waste disposal leading to soil contamination. Residents in their letter to the tribunal have also highlighted that they are experiencing respiratory issues, skin problems, and other health hazards. Following protests by locals, 4 units in the IDC were ordered to close down by the govt. However, all 4 were permitted to recommence by paying stipulated fines and imposing certain restrictions.
