Forest Dept to use 10 drones for real time monitoring of forests to curb wildfires

    Digital Goa, Dec 11- Forest Dept will procure 8 to 10 drones to monitor the wildlife sanctuaries and protected areas in Goa in real time for wildfires, forest act violations and overall monitoring. 76.5 Hectare of forest was destroyed in wildfire last year. As precautionary measures in view of this, new technology will be used to combat the forest fires and also to monitor the wildlife sanctuaries and protected areas, informed Health Minister Vishwajeet Rane. Forest Survey of India (FSI)’s Web Map Service (WMS) and Web Feature Service (WFS) providing near real-time monitoring of forest fires will also be sought by the State Forest Departments. In addition to this 600 odd trekkers who were trained by the dept last year will be given refresher training before Dec 31 to aid in case of fire and other wildlife emergencies. In addition number of Aapda Mitras & Sakhis which presently stands at 350 will be further increased. Firelines will be drawn to prevent spread of fire, he added.

    Forest Minister warned of strict action against those setting forest areas on fire for clearing of areas, without taking due precautions. Collectors will be asked to issue notices in this regards, he added.

    Goa is accident capital of the country said Rane reacting to the phenomenal increase in number of road accidents in the State. He called for immediate measures to curb the accidents.
