Assembly debate over Mhadei turns stormy; Opposition demands weekly updates

A heated debate broke out in the Goa Legislative Assembly over Karnataka’s ongoing Mhadei river diversion, with Opposition demanding weekly status reports and accusing the government of inaction. Opposition also walked into the well of the house. Citing media reports, continued soil testing and ongoing work by Karnataka, Opposition slammed the govt for not informing the Supreme Court promptly or invoking relevant provisions of the Interstate Water Disputes Act. They also highlighted whooping Rs 16 crore spent on legal teams and consultations. MLA Alex Reginald who raised the issue during question hour expressed concerns about the ineffectiveness of PRAWAH and the stalled tiger reserve proposal. WRD Minister Subhash Shirodkar acknowledged Karnataka’s illegal works like underground conduits and said Goa had filed 10 interlocutory and contempt petitions keeping apex court informed about Karnataka’s illegal activities.
