Digital Goa, Mar 20 – A diarrhoea outbreak affecting 156 residents at the Prabhu Violetta residential complex has been traced to water contamination caused by a malfunctioning sewage treatment plant (STP), South Goa Collector Egna Cleetus said. She said that the non-functional STP led to untreated water mixing with treated water, which subsequently also contaminated borewell in the complex which has 328 flats. The first case was reported on March 12, with the number rising steadily to 156 by March 20, affecting occupants across five buildings. A comprehensive screening of all building blocks has been carried out, she added. With just 2 cases reported on Wednesday and no cases on Thursday, the situation is now under control, she informed. An earlier inspection by the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) on March 16 had flagged that the STP was not functioning properly. The Board has now directed the builder to take corrective measures. The builder is currently providing alternative water supply to residents, she added. Action will be initiated under the Goa Health Act, the Collector informed.
