Digital Goa, June 30 – Goa Government has convened a special meeting of the Transport Department on July 6 to review the functioning of the rent-a-car and rent-a-bike sector following a rise in accidents involving tourists. Transport Minister Mauvin Godinho said knee-jerk reactions would not help and that the government would examine mechanisms to improve regulation and enforcement.
Godinho said many accidents involve tourists who are allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol or without valid driving licences. He said the meeting will discuss whether changes are needed in the rent-a-car and rent-a-bike system, including action against illegal operators. The Minister added that no new rent-a-car licences have been issued in the last two years, despite representations seeking licences to generate employment for unemployed youth.
