Citizen collective People for Panjim has demanded the demolition of the cafeteria and amphitheatre at the Captain of Ports (CoP) terminal building, alleging that their construction contradicted an assurance given to the National Green Tribunal (NGT).In a press note, the group cited the NGT’s September 30, 2022 order, which recorded the CoP’s submission that plans for a cafeteria and amphitheatre had been shelved. It alleged that the department nevertheless built the amphitheatre and proposed handing it over to a private operator. While welcoming the withdrawal of the Rs 27-crore PPP tender floated last month following civil society objections, the group also pointed out reports that it would soon be refloated. The collective also demanded the removal of casino signboards and promotional material from the front of the terminal building and restoration of pedestrian access along DB Marg. Representatives said they will pursue legal challenge to the terminal building and its proposed commercial use if any. Accusing the government of pursuing pro-casino policies, they alleged that Panaji’s public buildings, waterfront spaces and pedestrian facilities were being diverted for private benefit.
