Environmentalists Urge PM Modi to Intervene in Goa’s Wildlife Project Approvals

Digital Goa, July 14 – Environmentalists in Goa have written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging him to intervene to prevent ecological damage allegedly being caused by the Goa government. They have expressed concern that too many projects are being approved within the state’s wildlife sanctuaries. Environmental activist Claude Alvares alleged that pressure is being exerted on the State Wildlife Board to approve these projects. He pointed out that a contract has been awarded for a special tourism project in Surla village of Sattari, which lies within the core area of the tiger reserve. Plans are in place to surround the project with electric fencing to protect it from wildlife. A similar project is also proposed in the Mollem Wildlife Sanctuary. In addition, a mining company has submitted a proposal for loading and unloading operations at Kalem, which also falls within the Mollem sanctuary, he added.
