Digital Goa, September 21, 2025 – Residents of Chimbel, joined by social activists from across Goa, staged a protest meet on Sunday opposing the proposed Unity Mall at Chimbel and the 17-storey Prashasan Stambh at Kadamba Plateau. Villagers pointed out that the mega projects are planned near eco sensitive zone of Toyyar Lake, which is also notified wetland. They asserted that they are strongly against both the projects and demanded biodiversity park for Goans at the Toyyar lake. Protestors expressed fears that the project would damage the lake, deplete aquifers, and disrupt local livelihoods. Locals also alleged that they were not taken into confidence before the projects were cleared. Incidentally, Chimbel panchayat has already passed a resolution opposing the projects. Protestors have asked the government to scrap the projects in view of the ecological and social concerns.
