Digital Goa, Aug 24 – Supreme Court has reserved its order on former Tehelka editor Tarun Tejpal’s application seeking exemption from surrendering following his conviction and 10-year rigorous imprisonment sentence in the 2013 sexual assault case. Under the SC Rules, a petitioner challenging a conviction or sentence involving imprisonment is generally required to surrender before approaching the court, unless the SC grants exemption from surrendering. Advocate General Devidas Pangam said the State has opposed Tejpal’s application, arguing that he should not be exempted from surrendering. On August 6, High Court had overturned Tejpal’s 2021 acquittal and sentenced him to 10 years’ rigorous imprisonment, directing him to surrender within four weeks. The Goa government has separately approached the apex Court seeking enhancement of the sentence to life imprisonment.
